The smooth, irregular shapes of Two Forms relate closely to pebbles that Moore collected along the beaches of Norfolk, England. However, as the forms seem to intermingle and respond to each other, Moore’s sensuous sculpture also appears to be a pair of human bodies. This inherent and psychologically provocative ambiguity reveals the sculptor’s ties to Surrealism. The lines incised in the sculpture both relate to the Surrealist interest in spontaneous mark-making and suggest prehistoric hieroglyphics in stone.
