Untitled, 1970

Lucas Samaras American, born Greece

Not on view

Beginning in 1966, Samaras made a series of lacelike drawings, each cut from a single sheet of paper. This portfolio consists of twelve delicately cut and layered pages, each featuring circular patterns surrounding a drawn square. Marked "PRIVATE" on the top sheet, the subsequent imagery depicts stencils, scissors, razor blades, concentric colored squares, and scalloped forms. Embedded in one black box is an image of a skull; in another, tiny erotic photographs are encased within rainbow-colored triangles.
