Throughout the 1920s O'Keeffe spent several months of each year (from spring to fall) at the Stieglitz family estate in Lake George, New York. Trees—maples, pines, poplars, and birches—were abundant there. O'Keeffe portrayed them singly or in groves, and often reflected the changes of the seasons in their colors. When she later moved to New Mexico, trees—particularly yellow cottonwoods—were again a source of inspiration.
