Dunand often collaborated with other designers and artists, many of whom were close friends. Among the notable French painters, sculptors, and illustrators who supplied pictorial programs for screens and decorative panels that Dunand rendered in lacquer were Georges Barbier, Jean Goulden, Paul Jouve, Jean Lambert-Rucki, Gustav Miklos, and François-Louis Schmied.

Jouve, a noted animal painter and sculptor, traveled extensively in North Africa, the Near East, and Asia. This panel is typical of his work, which was clearly inspired by the perceived exoticism of the far-reaching French colonies.
