Carl Paul Jennewein (American (born Germany) 1890–1978)
H. 5-1/4 inches (without base)
Gift of Albert Gallatin, 1936

In 1916 Jennewein was awarded the Prix de Rome, allowing him to spend several years studying sculpture in Italy at the American Academy. Best known for his monumental architectural sculptures, he rarely strayed from the classical ideal in his work. Here, Jennewein updated the idealized portrait bust, a staple of classical antiquity, with a fashionable marcelled hairstyle.
