According to the 1954 catalogue for the "British Artists in Crystal" exhibition (held at the Steuben Showroom), Piper—a noted painter and watercolorist—"takes a holiday from the neo-romanticism of which he is one of the leaders in British painting today. He has deserted the Gothic for the Grecian mood, and his circling dancers print a gay rhythm upon transparency."

During the early twentieth century, the Steuben Glass Works built its reputation as a manufacturer of high-quality glassware. An especially high lead content makes their glass blanks highly refractive—a suitable foil to the detailed engraved decoration that characterizes much of the firm's output.
