The swashbuckling, seventeenth-century musketeer was one of the most prevalent characters in Picasso's art in the last six years of his life. His direct source for "Woman and Musketeer" was his own painting "Rembrandt and Saskia" (1963), a tribute to the Dutchman's "Self-Portrait with Saskia" (ca. 1635, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden) and "Bathsheba at Her Bath" (1654, Musée du Louvre, Paris).
