Shiro Kuramata, a member of Memphis and among the most innovative designers of the late twentieth century, was fascinated by the visual possibilities of acrylic. This vase exemplifies the elegance and poetic lyricism of his minimalist aesthetic. Its prismatic luminosity changes with light and viewpoint, exploiting the optical effects of the material, a strategy Sottsass also employs in his use of acrylic in Cabinet No. 56.
