Like the Northumbrian small pipe, this type was influenced by the French musette de cour, but does not use bellows. It was developed during the eighteenth century for playing indoors. Its chanter works with a double reed, and the three drones (all with tuning slides) sound with single reeds. The longest drone gives the bass, the tenor the fifth, and the treble the octave.
