Wood block

Not on view

This noisemaker may have been used for a subsitute in religious services for the ringing of a bell, like a cog rattle replacing a bell during Holy Week services.

Description: plain rectangular block of hardwood with carved integral handle, the block hollowed from two sides by a slit, at the end opposite the handle a (modern) leather thong protrudes through a hole to loosely fasten a round wooden ball that strikes the wide sides of the block when it is shaken, producing a loud clack.
