The Hero Redhorn or Morningstar

Mississippian

Not on view

This sculptural pipe depicts the mythical warrior Redhorn, also known as Morningstar. A "horn" made of braided hair hangs from the left side of the figure’s head and references his name. Carved earplugs with faces also allude to his title, "He who wears Human Heads in his Ears."
This figure with a pipe bowl in the back wears an elaborate cape, possibly feathered or hung with small animal-skins, and a shell necklace. Native peoples have recounted the mythical warrior’s adventures since ancient times.
