Pieces and ornaments of guns (Plusieurs Pieces Et Ornements Darquebuzerie...), Plate 2

Artist and engraver Claude Simonin French

Not on view

Plate 2 of a series of plates of designs of ornaments for gunmakers. This plate shows a flintlock design with a man and a lion and grotesque masks. There is also an escutcheon on the left with three fleur-de-lis, a crown, two winged putti and grotesque scrollwork. The escutcheon in the lower right corner presents two stars, a flower and two masks. There are also vegetal scrolls, two frizzens and a sideplate on the page.
Simonin made two series of designs for gunsmiths, both of which were published in several editions. The design here was first published in 1684, reedited in 1685, 1705 and ca. 1776. The other plates in the folder lead us to believe this plate was part of the 1705 edition.
