Pieces and ornaments of guns (Plusieurs Pieces Et Ornements Darquebuzerie...), Plate 4

Artist and engraver Claude Simonin French

Not on view

Plate 4 of a series of plates of designs of ornaments for gunmakers. This plate shows a flintlock with a fight between a man and a centaur. A design for a trigger guard features a soldier dressed in antique clothes. Also on the plate is a grotesque mask, a festoon with a putto and a panoply with Athena.
Simonin made two series of designs for gunsmiths, both of which were published in several editions. The design here was first published in 1684, reedited in 1685, 1705 and ca. 1776. The other plates in the folder lead us to believe this plate was part of the 1705 edition.
