High Life

Engraver Henry Beckwith British
Printer H. Wilkinson British
1849
Not on view
This is a small variation of a print first published in 1834. Within a castle interior, a deerhound faces to the right, sitting by an armchair and cloth-covered table. Chivalric objects on the table point to the identity of the dog's owner and include a sixteenth-century helmet and breast-plate, a chalice, books, a scroll and quill, two rapiers, and a candlestick made from an eagle's talon, as well as hawking gloves and a bell. The print is based on a painting of 1829 now in the Tate Gallery, London.
