Kitchen Scene

L. T. P. Manjusri Sri Lankan

Not on view

Four women dressed in traditional waist-shirts (Sinh. tuppotiya) and long sleeved blouses, prepare food in an open kitchen with red interior walls, blue beams and a tiled roof. On the right two girls prepare coconut milk: one sits on the coconut scrapper whilst the other holds a machete for splitting the nut. To the left two women are pouring a liquid, likely the coconut milk, through a strainer into a large earthenware cooking pot set on rocks over a fire. An array of fresh fruits hangs from the rafters. The four woman all wear skirts decorated in the traditional Sri Lankan manner, with a saw-tooth patterned front panel (tumpal) and floral repeat patterns on the central ground.
