Circling the Arctic
Circling the Arctic belongs to a series that Johnson created after an artist’s residency aboard a schooner sailing through the Norwegian territory of the Arctic Circle. The photograph, delicately incised with a radiating grid, celebrates the pristine beauty of the frozen landscape while also underscoring the region’s fragility in the face of global climate change. Johnson works primarily with photography but also employs a variety of other media––sculpted figurines and dioramas, paint, ink, and bursts of glitter––to explore and amplify the emotional reality of her images.
