Nobleman on Horseback

mid-18th century
Not on view
This equestrian portrait of a prince is from the court of Sawar, a small state in Ajmer established by the Mughal emperor Jahangir. Initially, painting from this court showed strong subimperial taste, but by the mid-eighteenth century the Sawar workshops developed the distinct colored drawing style seen here.
