The Five Senses: Touch (Tactus)

Closely related to Georg Pencz German
1573–80
Not on view
Etching, part of a series of five oval prints with depictions of the five senses, represented by standing women with attributes, surrounded by landscapes. In the print, Touch (tactus) is represented by a woman in three quarter view, walking toward the left, her right arm extended to her front, and the left arm holding her dress. In front of her, on the left of the print, is a loom, upon which stands a snail, two attributes of touch. In his print of the same subject, closely related to this one, Georg Pencz also includes a loom, but has changed the snail for a spider.
