Queen Trisala Nursing the Newborn Mahavira: Folio from a Kalpasutra Manuscript

15th century
Not on view
A nearly identical composition as the birth scene, this painting depicts Trisala supporting the feeding infant Mahavira, while above, in another narrative, the infant is being rocked in a swing cradle by two handmaids. In this series we witness the appearance of the use of crimson along with the ultramarine ground, an innovation of the fifteenth-century style.
