Vase with Scene from The Story of the Blue Robe

China

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 203

Parallels to a vase with the same scene and an inscription identify the scene here as an episode from a Ming-dynasty play entitled The Story of the Blue Robe (Qingshan bao). This work recounts the story of a young scholar named Liang Hao who, for his help during a thunderstorm, was rewarded by the Daoist immortal Lu Dongbin with a bride, the promise of a successful career in government, and longevity.
