Evening coat

Designer Premet French

Not on view

The confluence of Egyptomania, Japonisme, and Mandarin Chinoiserie under the reductive rubric of Art Deco that occurred in the 1920s resulted in an intoxicating confusion of exoticisms. The tiered landscape with straw-hatted figures that appears on this evening coat resembles the picturesque Cathay portrayed on blue-and-white Chinese porcelain.
