Possibly made by Achille Barbizet French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 530

Though the fish and other aquatic creatures shown on this dish are certainly inspired by the work of the Renaissance potter Bernard Palissy, the impressive scale of this nineteenth-century platter suggests that it was probably intended for a large exhibition venue, possibly a universal exhibition. In 1878, Achille earned a silver medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition.
