Pedestal

North or Central European

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 307

Because relatively little ironwork survives, it is easy to forget its importance during the Middle Ages, yet we know it figured in the decoration of any building of significance. Marked by bold and legible forms, this work may have served as a stand for a tabernacle within a church.
