Spring Blossoms, Montclair, New Jersey

George Inness American
ca. 1891
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 769
Over the course of his career, Inness departed from the topographical views favored by many of his contemporaries, developing a more personal approach to landscape painting. Inspired by the work of French Barbizon artists and the pantheistic philosophy of the Swedish scientist and theologian Emanuel Swedenborg, his landscapes grew increasingly expressive and atmospheric. In this canvas—painted in the artist colony Inness established in Montclair, New Jersey—the artist has evoked a spring scene using subtle tonal modulations to represent blossoms at dusk. By the 1880s, the younger generation of European-trained artists celebrated Inness as an "American Original."
