The Wyndham Sisters: Lady Elcho, Mrs. Adeane, and Mrs. Tennant

The three daughters of the Honorable Percy Wyndham, a wealthy Londoner, appear in this monumental canvas. From the left, they are Madeline Adeane (1869–1941), Pamela Tennant (1871–1928), and Mary Constance, Lady Elcho (1862–1937). They posed for Sargent in the drawing room of their family’s London residence. Above them, in the shadows, George F. Watts’s portrait of their mother establishes their genealogy as well as Sargent’s, linking him to painters of the past. Within the bold composition, fluid, dynamic brushstrokes mingle with dabs of paint to delineate forms and suggest the textures of the opulent gowns against the brocade sofa. The elongated figures, typical of Sargent’s style about 1900, add to the impression of cosmopolitan aristocratic elegance.
