Lingerie

Designer Mrs. Sylvia Pedlar American
1955
Not on view
This nightgown shows how carefully Pedlar studied garments of the nineteenth century and interpreted various elements into her work. The bed jacket closely mirrors combing jackets of the nineteenth century, worn when women prepared for the day. The motif is also a very close copy to common motifs used in whitework embroidery of the nineteenth century. Overall, the garment shows the high-quality of her work, which impressively, she produced by machine. These are custom motifs that would rival any handmade French work done at the same time.
