Combat at a City Gate

Andrea Briosco, called Riccio Italian

Not on view

With the Lederer gift in 1986, the Museum received seventy-one plaquettes and related reliefs, among them this scene of foot soldiers and horsemen. There are three examples of Riccio's sarcophagus-inspired battle scene (one is in the Ca' d'Oro, Venice; the other in the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.), each with varying signatures on their backs. Our reverse bears a raised long-tailed R and two spirited incised profiles.
