Bottle with flowers of the four seasons
Hard-paste porcelain painted with colored enamels over transparent glaze (Hizen ware; Imari type)
H. 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm.)
The Hans Syz Collection, Gift of Stephan B. Syz and John D. Syz, 1995
Although the square shape of the bottle replicates a Dutch glass vessel used for holding wine or spirits, the decoration of the flowers of the four seasons—including chrysanthemums symbolic of spring, and peonies for summer—is based on Chinese and Japanese traditions.
