Charger with birds

Joseph-Théodore Deck French
Decorator Ernest Carrière French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 556

This large dish was decorated by Ernest Carrière, a painter and ceramicist who worked in Deck’s studio. He was the brother of the Symbolist painter Eugène Carrière. The eerie aura of this scene may reflect the mystical otherworldly nature of Symbolism. The dramatic effect is highlighted by the striking contrast between the black clouds and the moonlit sky in Deck’s famous blue glaze.
