Terracotta column-krater (bowl for mixing wine and water)

Attributed to the Orchard Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 171

Obverse, Hermes and Poseidon pursuing women
Reverse, youth between two women, one carrying a torch

The amorous escapades of the Greek gods are familiar subjects on vases. The depiction on the reverse is more sober; the torch indicates the time of day. Both scenes are directly pertinent to the symposium, where the vase would have been used.
