Terracotta column-krater (mixing bowl)

Attributed to the Dolon Painter

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 161

Obverse, two women and two warriors. Reverse, four youths

Compared to his earlier work displayed nearby (L.1988.81.4), this one shows the distance that the Tarporley Painter has moved from Attic models. He included indigenous features such as the two nestorides held by the women and the equipment of the young warriors. These details provide some information about the local populations for whom such vases were made.
