Terracotta semicircular stand
8th century B.C.
Overall: 3 1/2 x 12 3/8in. (8.9 x 31.5cm)
Rogers Fund, 1919
The typology of ceramic shapes was well established as early as the Geometric period. Pieces such as this one, however, demonstrate the existence of atypical shapes that were probably specially ordered for specific functions. The stand may have held offerings, such as fruit and grains.
