Terracotta volute-krater (vase for mixing wine and water)

Attributed to Sophilos

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 152

Sophilos is the first known artist from the Athenian Potters' quarter to have signed his name on his work—once as potter and three times as painter. This early form of the volute-krater is decorated with two boars in front and a bull with another animal in back.
