Bronze kothon (vessel for perfumed oil)
Late Archaic or Classical
5th century B.C.
Overall: 3 1/4 x 7 1/16in. (8.3 x 18cm)
diameter 6 5/16in. (16cm)
Purchase, Sarah Campbell Blaffer Foundation and Nicholas S. Zoullas Gifts, 1987
The kothon was designed with an incurving rim to prevent the precious contents from spilling. If the vase were tipped, the liquid would merely run into the hollow rim.
