Strand photographed Henry Churchill and his wife, Mary, in Mamaroneck, New York, about 1922. Henry Stern Churchill (1893–1962) was an architect and city planner best known for his work on urban housing issues and his 1925 book, The City Is People—“an approach to city planning examining the achievements and failures of the past, the opportunities and difficulties of the present, and the possibilities and prospects of the future.” Although Strand’s relationship to Churchill is unknown, it is likely that their shared social concerns created a bond between them.
