According to JCW, Arthur Siegel's son confirmed that this photograph was taken in 1939. The event was a protest by Chrysler United Auto Workers (UAW). According to Houk, this was one of two large prints of this image in the Siegel estate. The other one had been acquired by the MMA (1981.1046). Five other prints exist as 8x10" prints. The MMA print shows very probably the same event but at another moment. It is reproduced in Arthur Siegel Retrospective (Chicago: Edwynn Houk Gallery, 1982, pl.6), and in MMA Counterparts, pl.6. Naef dated the photograph May 19, 1941.
