Targone (club shield), for the Gioco del Ponte
H. 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm); W. 8 5/8 in. (21.9 cm)
Gift of William H. Riggs, 1913
Each combatant in the gioco del ponte was equipped with a targone, a sturdy clublike shield that was unique to the event. The shields were decorated with the insignia of the squadrons that took part in the mock combat or, in rare instances such as this, with an image of a fully armed contestant.
