This early war view documents Union soldiers investigating the extensive defensive works built by the Confederate army after their stunning victory at Manassas in the war’s first land battle, on July 21, 1861. Mathew B. Brady released the photograph by two members of his corps of field photographers as number 234 in his series "Incidents of the War."
