Signature: None. From a folding album only on the end sheet, JP 539.
Inscription: An inscription by a former owner shows that the picture was examined on the 21st day of the 6th month of An-ei 8, i.e. September 1, 1779, by the fourth Iwai Hanshiro, who identified th actor taking the woman's role as Nakamura Takesaburo. This identification was a mistake. Takesaburo, who was a pupil of Gentaro, used a mon having the same devices but marshalled differently; and he was not a member of the company at Yamamura-za in 1709.
Marking: The small outline drawings of rats, bats, etc. that appear upon the print, were drawn upon it by the eccentric and dissipated artist Kawanabe Kyosai (1831-1889) who was at one time the owner of the album and who imprinted his red seal upon the several sheets of prints that it contained.
