Head of Dionysos (The God of Wine and Divine Intoxication)
Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara)
H. 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm); W. 7 in. (17.8 cm); D. 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm)
Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Uzi Zucker, 1979
This mature bearded man has grape leaves in his hair, suggesting that he is Dionysos. The furrowed brow, indications of age, and piercing gaze reflect a taste for naturalism. The head was buried, and over the centuries a hard crust developed on the surface.
