Originally destined for a home, where it would have been used for private worship, this image of the Madonna and Child is fittingly set in a softly lit domestic interior. Beyond the window is a mill that Fra Bartolomeo copied from the Netherlandish painter Hans Memling, who was popular among Florentine patrons—evidence of the international transmission of artworks and motifs at the time. This work was painted before Fra Bartolomeo joined the Dominican order in 1500, at which time he renounced painting, only to resume in 1504.
