sale, Phillips, London, December 11, 1990, no. 51, as "Nuremberg School, 16th Century, Portrait of Abbess Pirkheimer . . . ," for £44,000; [Stanley Moss, New York, until 2005; sold to Salander]; [Salander-O'Reilly Gallery, New York, 2005–6]
This is a modern portrait made in the style of paintings by Albrecht Dürer. Caritas was the sister of Dürer's close friend and patron, Willibald Pirckheimer, and was personally acquainted with Dürer, who dedicated his woodblock book of the "Life of Mary" to her.All aspects of this picture's condition are related to the process of artificial "aging" typically used in the creation of forgeries.
