Cara Dufour Denison in The Thaw Collection: Master Drawings and Oil Sketches, Acquisitions Since 1994. Exh. cat., Pierpont Morgan Library. New York, 2002, pp. 236–37, no. 110, ill. (color), states that the site has not been identified but appears to be in the Campagna outside of Rome, possibly in the Alban or Sabine hills northwest of the city; notes that it shows the artist's focus on structure and simplification of the subject; quotes his unpublished journal regarding the great impression this landscape made on him; observes that he used the same color palette as Camille Corot here, even before meeting the older artist.
Esther Bell. "Catalogue Raisonné of the Thaw Collection." Studying Nature: Oil Sketches from the Thaw Collection. Ed. Jennifer Tonkovich. New York, 2011, p. 130, no. 85, ill. (color), calls it "Landscape near Rome".
