Interest in Native American heritage pervaded the United States at the turn of the century, as illustrated here by this desk set (1974.214.11-.14) that consists of large and small blotters, a tray, and an inkpot in the "American Indian" pattern, which was introduced in 1909. The stylized serpent, frog, bird, rain, and storm represent the seasons; connected circles represent the flight of time.
