Bottle with Cut Design

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 453

The white lines on the surface of this small bottle were engraved with a rotating device. This decorative technique carries on the tradition of late Roman vessels engraved in a similar fashion. The similarity to Roman glasswork suggests that this piece dates from a transitional period, early in Islamic history.
