Lantern for a Lamp

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 453

This unglazed lantern has a small opening that allowed the insertion of a lamp, and a handle that made it easier to carry. Its abstract pattern of pierced lines would have cast pleasing shadows when the lamp inside was lit.
