The motifs on this box allude to Suma and its associated romances of the exiles Yukihira, from Tales of Ise, and Genji, from theTale of Genji. It was presented by the Imperial University of Tokyo to the donor, an adviser to the Japanese minister of the Department of Education from 1873 to 1879.
