Approach to a Mountain Village with Horsemen on the Road

Fra Bartolomeo (Bartolomeo di Paolo del Fattorino) Italian

Not on view

This is a significant early example of pure landscape drawing, produced infrequently in European art in the early sixteenth century. The sheet comes from a now-disbound album of landscape studies by Fra Bartolomeo assembled by an eighteenth-century collector. Fra Bartolomeo likely produced these drawings outdoors during his travels in and around Florence, often to Dominican establishments (he was a member of the Dominican Order). A number of the sites
he recorded in these drawings have been identified.
