This drawing copies a 1530s altarpiece (now GalleriaSabauda, Turin) by Gaudenzio Ferrari, a painter andsculptor best known for his religious paintings. Ferrari wasborn near Vercelli, in what is now Piedmont, and many ofhis early works were commissioned by nearby churches andconvents; later in his career he executed works for Milanand neighboring towns in Lombardy. He had a number offollowers, one of whom probably executed this drawing. The figure of the saint at left is drawn on a separate stripof paper that was added to the composition.
