Death of the Virgin

North French

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 305

This fragment, possibly part of a sculptural retable recounting events from the life of the Virgin Mary, shows the apostles at her deathbed offering a final blessing. The diagonal composition with attendant apostles was popular in German prints and paintings of the fifteenth century.
